BA Degree (accredited)

Introduction

Students interested in the field of Psychology can major in Psychology with specialization in Christian Psychology and their qualification will form a spiritual, academic and professional basis to practice in the mental health field as a Christian. The BA Degree in Psychology may lead to acceptance in Psychology post-graduate programmes (e.g. Honours in Psychology, Bachelor of Psychology).

Students who are not specifically interested in Psychology can major in Industrial Psychology and/or Communication and/or Sociology which will lead to a general BA Degree that will form a foundation to work in the business, political or communications arenas.

BA degree enrolment takes place annually from November to January.

If you choose Psychology as a main subject it will lead to a BA Degree in Psychology and will enable you to continue your studies in Psychology.

Method of Tuition

Open-distance learning: Courses are presented by means of a system of tutorial classes, DVDs, study letters, study guides or manuals and prescribed books.  Tutorial classes are optional except for one tutorial class period per annum that takes place in May.  The primary language of instruction is English.

 

Assessment

  • Assignments: Typed assignments for the different subjects have to be completed and submitted on specified dates.  Assignments completed in each semester will constitute the semester mark.  To gain admission to the June and October/November exams the student will have to obtain a semester mark of at least 40%.
  • Examinations: An examination for each semester course will be written in June and October/November respectively. Students will write examinations at specified examination venues. To pass an examination the student will have to have acquired at least 50%.  The final mark consists of both the semester and the examination mark.  Both the examination mark and the final mark have to be 50% or higher to pass a semester course.
  • Practicum: Practical assignments for Psychology 2D and 3D must be completed and consist of the recordings of debriefing and counselling sessions, as well as written reports based on those sessions.

 

Duration and Difficulty

The BA degree cannot be completed in less than three years and must be completed within a maximum of five years.   Prospective students must keep in mind that the degree is time intensive and requires an estimated minimum of twenty study hours per week throughout each semester.

Prerequisites for Admission

Matriculated in 2008

  1. A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with an Admission Point Score of at least 24 (the sum of points achieved in best 6 NSC subjects, excluding Life Orientation).

      Minimum requirements for specific subjects:

  1. English: 4 (50 - 59%)
  2. Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy: 3 (40 - 49%)
  3. Life Orientation: 4 (50 - 59%)

2.   Or a valid certificate of conditional exemption from the South African Matriculation Board.

 Matriculated prior to 2008

  1. A South African Senior Certificate with exemption/endorsement.

Minimum requirements for specific subjects:

  1. English: 4
  • Higher Grade (or First Language): E
  • Standard Grade: D

2.   Mathematics

  • Higher Grade: E
  • Standard Grade: D

2. Or a valid certificate of conditional exemption from the South African Matriculation Board.

 International students

Valid certificate of foreign conditional exemption from the South African Matriculation Board.

Condictional Exemption may be considered in the following cases:

  1. The applicant has a Senior Certificate/Equivalent without exemption and additionally successfully completed the ICP Caregivers Qualification in 2005 - 2008 or the Basic Christian Counselling Course during 2009 or later, with an overall average of at least 55%.
  2. Or the applicant is 45 years of age or older.

Submit certified copies of the following documents with your application form:

  • South African senior certificate/National Senior Certificate.
  • Certified copy of your school report/statement of results.
  • If applicable submit relevant documentation from the matriculation board regarding your exemption status.
