Advanced Counselling Course (ACC)

Introduction

This course is meant for people interested or involved in counselling. With the completion of this course students will be able to evaluate counselling models from a biblical perspective, exhibit an awareness of human complexity from a cognitive and systems perspective and apply basic counselling interventions.  These interventions are aimed at debriefing trauma situations, the strengthening of relationships and the enhancement of community and spiritual well-being. Method of Tuition

Open-distance learning: Courses are presented by means of a system of tutorial classes, study letters, study guides or manuals and prescribed books.  Tutorial classes are optional except for one tutorial class period per annum that takes place in May.  The primary language of instruction is English. Students may enrol for this course in either January or May/June (conditions apply).

 

Assessment

  • Assignments: Typed assignments for the different subjects have to be completed and submitted on specified dates.  Assignments completed in each semester will constitute the semester mark.  To gain admission to the June and October/November exams the student will have to obtain a semester mark of at least 40%.
  • Examinations: An examination for each semester course will be written in June and October/November respectively. Students will write examinations at specified examination venues. To pass an examination the student will have to have acquired at least 50%. The final mark consists of both the semester and the examination mark. Both the examination mark and the final mark have to be 50% or higher to pass a semester course.

 

Duration and Difficulty

The Advanced Counselling Course cannot be completed in less than one year and must be completed within a maximum of three years.  This course requires approximately twelve study hours a week for each semester.

 

Prerequisites for admission

  • The Basic Christian Counselling Course (previously named Caregivers Qualification) obtained from the ICP or
  • Recognition of prior learning in the Christian Counselling field (ICP will evaluate certificates/diplomas to determine admission).

 

Exemption Information

Students who have completed the ACC, will be granted the following credits upon continuance with a BA degree at the ICP: Christian Ethics 2A & 2B, Psychology 1D & Psychology 3D.
